Larisa Iordache, World All-around silver medalist

Larisa Iordache’s talent drew the attention of both gymnastics’ specialists and fans ever since her Junior years and Romania expected her to explode into the gymnastics world at the 2012 London Olympics, in her first senior year. Although Larisa has been one of the most successful gymnasts of the past years at European level – two time gold medalist in 2012, gold medalist on beam in 2013 and two time gold medalist in 2014 – the pressure and health issues prevented her from performing at the best of her ability on the World stage. You probably remember well the leg injury she suffered right before the 2012 Olympics…

Instead, the Larisa Iordache we’ve seen at this World Championship is more mature, more focused and better prepared to defend her chances in the finals and not allow her nerves to prevent her from makind the podiums. With each competition, she has shown she is in great shape both physically and mentally and made it clear she is one of the strongest medal candidates here. Today, neither her emotions, nor her rivals, not even the Uneven Bars could stop her from making the World podium. With two scores in the 15s and the top score on beam, Larisa won the All-around’s silver medal today and made it clear she is after the gold medal in Sunday’s beam and floor finals. Today’s medal is the first All-around medal in 7 years for Romania, which had not made this podium since Steliana Nistor won silver in 2007.
