Euro 2014: Three more medals for the Romanian Juniors

The last day of the Women´s Artistic Gymnastics European Championships started very early today with Junior Event Finals (the seniors will take the podium in the afternoon session, starting 1pm CET). Romania was represented in three of the four finals and the day started off really well with Laura Jurca´s performance on vault. She scored the second highest total for her double and full twisting Yurchenko vaults, her second silver medal at this championship. Great Britain´s Elissa Downie is the new Junior European Champion on vault (photo left). Watch Laura’s vaults from this final:

As usual, we have very high expectations from any beam or floor final that includes at least a Romanian. Andreea Iridon was the first Romanian to compete on beam today and she did it very well, earning her first medal of this championship. She takes silver in a final won by the current Junior All-around Champion, Russia’s Angelina Melnikova (photo right). Unfortunately, Anda Butuc was not able to hold it together today and placed sixth, although she had qualified in second to this final.

The day ended with yet another medal for the Romanian team, on floor, with Andreea Iridon. This gymnast had not managed a clean performance in the first two days of competition but she changed this today, taking home two medals. After her silver medal performance on beam, she added another bronze on floor, following Britain’s Catherine Lyons and Amy Tinkler. Laura Jurca finished fifth in this final. These two Romanians gathered a total of four medals at this junior championship, we will be looking forward to see how they do in the senior ranks starting next year.
