Euro 2014: Laura Jurca, silver medal in the Junior All-Around

Laura Jurca and Andreea Iridon represented Romania in today’s Junior All-Around final. The girls had qualified third and ninth, respectively, and were hoping to be able to improve on that. Even before the start of the European Championships, Laura was considered as one of the favorites for a medal in this final due to her consistency in competition. This is exactly how she competed today, leading the pack before the very last rotation of the day. Although her double Yurchenko had helped her earn this position, her bars routine could not score as high as Angelina Melnikova‘s beam. The Russian is the new Junior European Champion ahead of Laura and Great Britain’s Elissa Downie.

Andreea Iridon also improved on her qualification performance, placing sixth in today’s final, but she still had problems today. This time, it was on her best apparatus, missing out on her beam dismount. Both Romanians will have two more chances each to win a medal on Sunday morning, when the junior event finals are planned.

Action continues tomorrow in Sofia with the most important final of this Championship, the senior team final. Find more details on the schedule of this competition here. Link to live scoring here.
