Euro 2014: Seniors wrap up qualifications in second place

Action continues to build in Sofia, where the European Championships saw the seniors take over the podium today. For Romania, Larisa Iordache, Diana Bulimar, Andreea Munteanu, Ștefania Stănilă and Silvia Zarzu fought for a place in Sunday’s apparatus finals, the team final place being virtually guaranteed. The girls competed in the last subdivision of the day, together with some of the best European teams at the moment: Russia, Italy, Great Britain, Germany or Spain. They started the competition on uneven bars.

The less experienced gymnasts in senior competitions had a less successful day, making mistakes on events where they actually had a chance to make the finals. This is especially valid for Andreea Munteanu, which missed out on the beam and floor finals. She would have had a pretty good chance to medal in the beam final with her awesome 6.2 routine. Instead, the two leaders and most experienced gymnasts on this team, Diana Bulimar and Larisa Iordache demonstrated once again their toughness and helped the team on all events. Romania qualifies in second to Saturday´s team final, behind a great British team and ahead of Russia. The final starts from scratch so hopefully nerves will be under control by then and Romania will come back stronger than today.

Larisa had declared before this competition that she would have wanted to compete in an All-around final this year, feeling that she was fully prepared. This is exactly what she demonstrated today throughout the entire competition as the only Romanian to compete on all four events.  She made all four finals, placing first on beam and floor. Joining her in the floor final will be team mate, Diana Bulimar and fellow Romanian who now competes for Spain, Roxana Popa.

The Sofia competition continues tomorrow with the Junior All-around final, where Andreea  Iridon and Laura Jurca will be looking to medal. Find more details on the schedule of this competition here. Link to live scoring here.
