Euro 2014: Bronze medal for the Romanian junior team

The Sofia Artistic Gymnastics European Championships kick started today with a 2 in 1 format competition which included both qualification (for the invididual finals) and the team final for the junior gymnasts. Romania had to wait until the end of the day to perform at this event, together with other contenders for the continental title such as Russia, Great Britain or Italy. The gymnasts who are competing this year belong to the 1999/2000 generations and have a clear goal of making their Rio 2016 national teams.

The Romanian team – Andreea Iridon, Laura Jurca, Anda Butuc, Andreea Ciurușniuc and Andra Stoica – started the competition on beam and unsurprisingly put together the highest total score on this apparatus. The girls placed second on floor, third on vault and fourth on uneven bars to win the bronze medal of the team competition, a few hundredths away from second place, which went to the British team. Russia now holds the Junior European title while Romania duplicates the third place of the 2012 Brussels Europeans.

Romania will be represented in all invididual finals, except uneven bars. The gymnasts peformed as expected on beam (second place for Anda Butuc and third place for Andreea Iridon), floor (first two positions went to Andreea Iridon and Laura Jurca, respectively) and vault (Laura Jurca goes third into the final). Laura and Andreea will represent Romania in Friday’s All-around final.

The seniors will take the stage tomorrow for their qualification competition, with their finals not starting until Saturday. Find more details about the schedule of this competition here.
