The Romanian junior team places second at Jesolo

In their preparation for May’s Artistic Gymnastics European Championships, Romania decided to send a team of junior gymnasts at the 2014 edition of the Jesolo Throphy (Italy) made up of Laura Jurca, Andreea Iridon, Andra Stoica, Anda Butuc, Ștefania Orzu and Asiana Peng. They were joined by three of the members of the senior national team, Andreea Munteanu, Silvia Zarzu and Ștefania Stănilă. The only time Romania was present on the podium of this competition was back in 2009, when Amelia Racea won the junior All-around competition. Shawn Johnson, Anastasia Grishina and Kyla Ross are just some of the gymnasts who have also won gold here, in past editions. This competition originally included only the team and All-around events, but this year it was completed with event finals for both juniors and seniors.

In this morning’s junior competition, the Romanian team placed second, behind the USA but ahead of the host country, Italy. Laura Jurca was fourth in the All-around, in a competition dominated by USA’s Bailey Key, who scored the top results in three of the four events. Romania will take two gymnasts per apparatus to three of tomorrow’s event finals: Laura Jurca (who qualified to all finals) will be joined by Anda Butuc on bars, Andreea Iridon on beam and Andra Stoica on floor. Here is Andreea Iridon on bars:

Silvia Zarzu, a gymnast who can help the Romanian team especially on floor and vault, made her debut in a senior competition today. The girls did not manage to do too well in the All-around (the highest ranked Romanian today was Andreea Munteanu – 13th) but they did qualify for the following event finals: Munteanu and Stănilă on both beam and floor. The US team dominated both junior and senior competitions, with Kyla Ross winning the senior All-around title.
