2013 Worlds: Two finals for Marius Berbecar

While the qualification competition continues tomorrow with the second part of the women’s competition (which also includes Larisa Iordache and Sandra Izbașa), the men ended their two day qualification effort today. Except Cristian Bațagă, who is already known as the All-arounder of the Romanian team, the other four gymnasts competed only on their best events covering all except horizontal bar (the Romanian specialist on this event, Vlad Cotuna, was not selected for this team). The Romanian gymnast of the day was Marius Berbecar, with two flawless performances on vault (impressive execution scores on both his vaults) and parallel bars. He finally found the much needed consistency and this helped place him among the world’s top 8 gymnasts on both events. Let’s hope he can reproduce this in the apparatus finals this weekend.

Andrei Muntean did well on his two favorite events but it just wasn’t enough for him to make the finals here. We had hoped for more from him and Flavius, the leader of this team, but the latter didn’t have a great day – problems on pommel horse and vault took him out of the finals. Pommel horse was the “headache” of the day for the Romanian team with all three gymnasts who competed on this apparatus experiencing problems. Instead, parallel bars proved to be the strongest apparatus with two scores ranging in the 15s.

Here’s Flavius on vault:
