3 silver medals for Munteanu and Iridon in Japan

Two of Romania’s best junior gymnasts, Andreea Munteanu (1998) and Andreea Iridon (1999) traveled to Japan this weekend to compete at the Yohokama Junior International, an event that brought together top juniors from countries such as the USA, China, Russia, Japan or Great Britain. The competition was dominated by USA’s Bailie Key who swept the gold medals of the two-day competition.

The Romanians didn’t have a great day during the All-around/Qualification round, placing 5th and 12th overall, but managed to qualify to three event finals nonetheless: two for Munteanu (beam and floor) and one for Iridon (bars). We always have high expectations from these two gymnasts (considered as the top two Romanian juniors at the moment, something they confirmed at the recent Romanian Nationals where they placed second and third in the All-around, behind Larisa Iordache) and they didn’t let us down the second time around.

Day 2 of the competition was a whole different story for the girls, who managed to win a medal in every event they competed in. Andreea Iridon went out first in the bars final and secured a silver medal. This is truly an achievement and a recognition of Andreea’s efforts on bars since she competed among top international gymnasts like USA’s Key, Russia’s Bondareva and Kharenkova or China’s Wang. Andreea Munteanu also came back strong on her two favorite events, beam and floor, to win the silver medal on both. Both girls perform some impressive leaps and are known for their artistry.
