6 medals for Romania at the Doha World Cup

The 2013 edition of the Doha World Cup presented itself as the last important meet for the Romanian WAG and MAG teams before the European Championships next month. Most of the gymnasts on the provisional list for Moscow were present here: Larisa Iordache, whom we got to see for the first time this season, Diana Bulimar, Flavius Koczi, Marius Berbecar, Andrei Muntean and Daniel Rădeanu.

Unfortunately, the event started with sad news for the Romanian camp when Daniel Rădeanu, Junior European silver medalist last year, tore his Achilles during training and underwent surgery in Qatar. This was supposed to be Daniel’s senior debut but we are not likely to see him again this season. Wishing him a speedy recovery!!

The Romanians didn’t seem too affected by this blow, though, cruising through qualifications and making every single final they competed in (except for one). Larisa even presented a second vault for the first time to make all the apparatus finals from first or second place, while Flavius Koczi and Marius Berbecar qualified first to the floor and PB finals, respectively.

Here are the scores from qualifications:

The competition continued on Thursday with 3 MAG finals (floor, pommel horse and rings) and 2 WAG finals (vault and bars). The Romanians started off strong and won 2 medals in the first two events of the day.

Flavius Koczi repeated the French Internationals success on floor with another gold medal on this apparatus, scoring a 14.925 for his effort. He couldn‘t replicate that on pommel horse (Marius Urzică accompanied him here), where he placed 8th, but he looks back on track to performing well on this apparatus (where he holds a European title).

Larisa Iordache won silver on vault after performing a second vault for the first time, Bellu’s touch is starting to become visible… (he was also present in Doha and congratulated Larisa after vault). UB was not what we expected from Larisa, her execution let her down yet again but we are seeing signs that she is trying hard to improve here as well so that she can have a better chance at an All-around medal.

Diana Bulimar performed on UB as well, finishing the competition in 5th place with a 13.750. She didn’t seem very happy, either, with her performance… In the last final of the day, the rings final, Andrei Muntean performed well to score a 15.150 (6th).

The second day of event finals gave us the chance to watch all Romanian gymnasts compete again in at least one final. Flavius went first, on vault, to place 5th, while Diana placed 4th on beam with a steady routine. Marius Berbecar did not perform as well as he did in qualifications and lost his chance to medal in the PB final.

But this was, by far, the best day for the Romanian team at Doha with Larisa, Diana and Andrei winning back to back finals on beam, floor and paralel bars, respectively. Larisa performed wonderfully on beam (and showed a new routine with two amazing skills) for a 15.500 and placed second on floor, with a pretty clean routine, including the Silivaș skill. Here´s her impressive beam routine:

Diana outscored Larisa on execution (although the latter had a 0.2 difficulty advantage) to win the floor title here, hopefully this will give Diana wings for the upcoming European Championships.

The surprise of day came from the men’s camp, where Andrei Muntean performed really well his PB routine to win the event. He must be really happy with this!

It was also impressive to see the number of Romanian fans present at this meet!!

These were 3 very interesting and successful days for the Romanian gymnasts, who are now looking towards Moscow for the upcoming European Championship. Good luck!!
