Gold and silver for Romania at the French Internationals

For the past two days, Olympic champions Oksana Chusovitina, Kristian Berki and Yang Hak Seon, World champions Ksenia Afanasyeva, Vanessa Ferrari or Danell Leyva, among many others, competed in La Roche-sur-Yon at the 2013 French Internationals. It was also the first competition of the season for European champions Diana Bulimar and Flavius Koczi, who represented Romania, with Larisa Iordache having to pull out at the last minute due to injury.

Both of them performed on their best apparatus: beam and floor for Diana, vault and floor for Flavius. Both also had a similar competition, advancing to floor finals from second place – 14.266 for Diana and 15.166 for Flavius – but not making their other final. While Flavius was penalized by his execution to place 8th on vault (13.400), Diana missed beam twice for 10th (11.966). We did see a lot of falls and, unfortunately, even injuries – Janine Berger and Kristian Thomas having to be carried out after their vaults – during the first day.

On the second day, Flavius went out first and improved his previous performance for a 15.366 and a gold medal on floor. Diana showed great control and execution during her performance for a 14.533, but did not manage to win over Afanasyeva of Russia who took home the gold medal. A silver and a gold medal is not bad at all for the first competition of the season. Cottbus is next…
