Alexandra Piscupescu and Ana Luiza Filiorianu at the Moscow Grand Prix

Alexandra Piscupescu and Ana Luiza Filiorianu (both from Olimpia Bucharest) represented Romania in the Senior and Junior competitions, respectively, at this weekend’s Moscow Grand Prix. It was the first international competition of the season for both gymnasts so we got a first look at new routines matching the also new code of points in place for the next Olympic cycle.

Alexandra Piscupescu

Alexandra made three of the four event finals and finished 12th in the All-around, after her ribbon routine scored only a 14.2. It is for this routine that Alexandra chose vocals, going for an Alessandro Safina original, now sung by one of Romanian’s best tenors as she told us in last month’s interview. She placed 10th on clubs and ball, 7th on hoop and 23rd on ribbon. Russia won the competition through Margarita Mamun, with Bulgaria’s Sylviya Miteva in second and Daria Svatkovskaya, also from Russia, in third.

Ana Luiza finished 9th in the Junior All-around competition, with hoop and ball her best routines (something she shared with Alexandra at this competition). Yulia Bravikova of Russia won the event, with Eleonora Romanova of Ukraine in second and Zhala Piriyeva of Azerbaijan in third.

Scores and routines linked here:

Unfortunately, Alexandra made a couple of mistakes during events finals that prevented her from placing higher than 7th in the final raking. But this is just the start of the season…
